Mental instability can disqualify you from owning weapons.
If you're expectation is that a government can magically make future mental instabilities apparent through some sort of screening, I think you may be expecting too much.
You can lose any right if you abuse it or through due process.

Sigmund Freud defined four parts of a psyche; the id, the ego, the superego and the stratego. The Stratego being the highest form of morality and scientific thinking.
If guns are not outlawed, the in-laws will have guns.
