Thinking about getting a new rifle. I kind of like the Ruger Mini 30 and leaning toward that and have always wanted one but I also like the Ruger Gunsite Scout rifle based on a design by Colonel Jeff Cooper.

Basically needed for a ranch gun, probably mostly hog/varmit hunting in central Texas. Thoughts?

If you are going for varmint, use a bow. If you are going for hogs, use a .30-30.

On a related-to-varmint note, I once had an old farmer tell me that the best way to get rid of coyotes was to get a giant bowl, place it near your animals, and fill it with coca-cola... and anti-freeze. He then proceeded to tell me that he stacked the corpses of 6 coyotes, lit them on fire, and watched the burn from his house, drinking a cup of tea. Moral of the story, it is probably best not to follow my advice. The methods for killing varmint that I've been exposed to... they are cruel. And unusual.

This is meant to be a discussion of the relative merits of three products, which I named specifically and provided links to information about. I don't have any idea what you are going on about. Are you trying to troll me or something?

Your stated goal is to kill varmint and hogs.

You have proposed three weapons, seemingly capable of doing both efficiently.

My point: that is impossible. No matter which gun of the three you choose, it will either be overkill or underkill.
