Really it's more of a question of impulsivity and how this psychological characteristic is constantly manipulated by society, which warps an individuals ability to think for themselves. Most people simply conform to what they see, and if they see commercials for McDonalds that's what they are going to eat.

The notion of self control is a lot more complicated than simply deciding between "smart" and "dumb" decisions. People are bombarded with so much misinformation they usually don't understand very much of anything.
