Interesting, although figure Mercury is just a placeholder planet... only important because it is there.

I think we'll find that life exists in several places in our solar system. After seeing how life lives at the bottoms of our oceans, its quite clear that the sun is not needed for life to exist and it can exist in extreme pressures as well as temperatures.

the question for that is did life originate there, or did it evolve to live there?
if life can't originate in such crazy environments there's little hope for elsewhere in the solar system.

i'm not going to entertain the theory of panspermia until it gains enough scientific legitimacy to upset the current model of organic molecules forming on earth.
