I saw a similar deal a while back, this must be one of the applications. They can literally wash away proteins, lipids etc from an organ and it leaves a lattice which can then be used to grown an entirely new organ from your own stem cells. So organ transplants without the rejection reaction are now possible.
It's been performed successfully on rats so this stuff is just around the corner. Too bad no one will be able to afford any of it, but cool just the same.

no one being able to afford it must be why it's being done

Didn't say it wasn't worth it. This technology should be developed as quickly and as effectively as possible in order to make it as widely available as possible, which means eliminating the private profit aspect from it.
Like most major technological developments private investment had little to do with it.

He thinks that since the country is publicly funded then private innovation doesn't count. I could invent a portable fusion generator tomarrow...but because I'm plugged into the grid and drive on the roads, it wouldn't by mine.
