Although I have never seen any space critters myself, my guess is they have been here a long time, and probably played a part in our religion and who we are.

Honestly, I find it funny that people are surprised when astronauts go nutty. Considering what they do, particularly the earliest ones, people should understand that they started off as nutty.
If the one-way-trip-to-mars thing actually gets going, I promise there will be word of "mars madness" at some point, because you have to be somewhat crazy to give up everything for a one-way trip to a place that can't even sustain life.
Hell, look at California.
