There are plenty of people here in the US that barely live any better. At least those "coffin rooms" look clean and secure.
In the forseeable future housing for low paid workers in the US is going to get super tight and expensive as well unless you'd like to live in the middle of some neglected crime ridden ghetto the US government and business has decided to forget for years now.
In some cases, many migrant workers and others live in tents on company grounds, like with canneries, etc. Compare.
Many people in the US think we have it so much better off than other places such as Tokyo because they may be slightly better off and put blinders on as to what's going down right here at home.
