There are greater and lesser degrees of addiction, and greater and lesser degrees of symptoms.
For instance, tons of people are addicted to sugar, coffee and food in general. The symptoms are quite damaging, but not anywhere as tangible as those of drugs. Even more people are addicted to smoking, and the behavioral aspects of the addiction tend to be far more difficult than the nicotine withdrawal.
Point is, addiction is very real, and can result from chemical dependency of the body or of the lab.
