Yeah it's actually easy to forget how major a character Betty was for 3 seasons. I think Matthew Weiner said that he knew very early on Betty would die of terminal illness at the end of the series.

Betty had to be kept in the show for being the mother of his children. The fact that they killed her off was because all of Dons mistresses or other wives were all removed from the show. It was just another example of how he treated his women and the bad things that happened to them. For the show, her cancer was something he couldn't fix with a check, and it changed him.
