To be fair Spider, Richard Hammond is an unabashed Americo-phile, for which he takes heat on the show. Truthfully, I suspect a lot of the American bashing (and it's not that rampant) is a bit tongue in cheek, as is much of the show. When they had the hosts of the Australian version of Top Gear on, they totally dogpiled them as well. It's just how the show rolls.
Clarkson takes a much bigger piss on his own homegrown issues (and cars) than he ever does with the US, which has gotten him in some hot water in the past.

Benny Hill was unfunny slapstick, Monty Python subversive genius. Comparing the two is akin to saying I like American comedies such as Two and Half Men and Arrested Development.
