In the UK and Canada there are awesome military themed youth groups like the army and air cadets. In the UK and Canada cadets are considered a legitimate youth activity and hobby. Why aren't such programs widespread in the US? Are American parents biased and prefer to have their children involved in athletics? Would American parents become angry if a cadet program was established in their community? I talked to my neighbor who has a son in high school who is heavily invested in athletics and he said he wouldn't let his son join a program like the cadets.The training and opportunities of the cadets looks exciting and intense! I can say that being in a program like the cadets beats the hell out of the scouts! I wanted something more intense than the scouts! I wished I had something like this when I was in school! It sure beats the hell out of kicking a ball during your high school years! Ender's Game was my favorite book and obviously it fostered my desire to participate in a youth military training program.

Don't forget athletics are a big part of American high school culture. I heard that some school administrators have the perception that a military program would interfere with the sacred cow of high school athletics. Do you think cadet programs are more popular in the UK because American parents want their children involved in athletics?

I think these youth would benefit more from a program like the UK's Air Training Corps or the Army Cadet Force. One advantage of a cadet corp over a youth football team is that cadets are inclusive to all youth. That means cadets would learn how to work with peers from different groups.

I don't know how huge ROTC and JROTC are but they do exist. I think one HS in our area had JROTC. Also the boy scouts is somewhat similar.

There is a very good reason why the US doesn't have youth army groups,... we don't have the historic principle to avoid creating a social movement out of underage jarheads. Britain has a military group for youth based in historic pride. Not the sexiness of using killing machines. If the US had youth groups, it would be nothing but using killing machines, which of course would turn entire generations of youth into quasi-sociopaths. We don't have the history to teach our youth what the army means in principle, all we know how to do is aggrandize killing.

I think it is an injustice that such groups are not available to youth in our nation! I think a cadet force would set an example of good behavior to other youth! Imagine a group of students who are knights in shining armor in their school.
