I really think that people just like how they look. The problem is that it comes with heat, which we need no more of. You can get the ones that don't make heat, but then it's like some TV screen or something.

I have zero desire for one. Personally, I could get by without a heater in my house at all. When my wife and kids are out of town, I have no problem keeping the house around 65*. In the winter, it means openning windows. In the summer, it means running the A/C non-stop.

Most houses and condos in Los Angeles have fireplaces. Or all of SoCal if it's at least 2 bedrooms. My parents condo and grandmother's house has one but I don't. However, when I lived in San Diego both my apartments had a fireplace. We never used it and we put the big TV in front of it, lol.

I've used my parents fireplace a few times as a kid but only because I wanted to make smores. I've never understood why so many places in SoCal have fireplaces since there's no reason to ever use one. Sure we put on the heater but the fireplace seems something for when it's really cold and if it's 45 at 2am here that's about as bad as it normally gets.
