we don't have 19 in service because those are light assault ships. they aren't going to project a lot of power

there's also been the idea of mobile base platforms, multiple ships putting down huge stabilizers for support and connecting to one another, capable of launching and landing our biggest aircraft. they've put that aside as it's too spendy. so we getting merely the carriers.

the 10 they are building is to replace the 10 in service. these things take a long time. the first will be replacing a 55 year old ship.

oh and enyon, the america and wasp carry helicopters and v/stol aircraft. yeah it can launch thing in the air but very few types of things. it's really just for amphibious landings and support of those landings directly. it's not blue sea dominance

carriers are big sticks for projecting power, whether they are used specifically or not. and yes they are for blue sea dominance they take out the approaching ships of the enemy. sure subs can be used too but carriers can take them out before they get anywhere near the task force. but we use them all the time for sorties anywhere we're fighting

Well...to absolutely need the carriers....hmmm. Maybe when they sent the Lincoln up to Korea last year when they started shelling shit...well, on the other hand there are like 5 air force bases in the area with far more muscle than any carrier. So, in that case the carrier would have been kinda just a scary Big Stick to wave around.

With forward air bases and tankers, the Air Force can terrorize shit pretty effectively, just not as conveniently. The carriers tho...you can just park them in the gulf and zap things.
