Definitely do the touristy things.
The best part of NYC is just walking around IMO. Find a random hole in the wall place and give it a shot. If there's a line avoid it, it's just trendy and probably sucks.
I would check out west village, soho just for kicks, LES if you want nightlife. Go to Central Park. Go to the great lawn at night and there's a beautiful view of the city framed against the great lawn. It will be quiet and peaceful too. People don't seem to go there much.
Go to the ramble and laugh at what we call nature.
Times Square is mandatory once and only once.
And walk across the Brooklyn bridge. Smorgasburg in Williamsburg is pretty cool but it will be insane since this is the first weekend it's open.
Veselka in east village is good and unique.
Momoya is good for sushi if you're trying to stay affordable.
Get a pork bun at momufuku, or go to momofuku's milk bar and get delicious desserts.
If you want to drop some money Bernadin is some of the best food I've ever eaten but it's truly ridiculous pricing. I've never gone there on my own dime.
Staten Island ferry is kinda cool.
