So this news came out a few days back but I'm just getting around to discussing it here now.
Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz was suspended for the first 25 games of the 2013 regular season because he tested positive for amphetamines (adderall).
I'm very disappointed and saddened by this news. Ruiz was the best offensive player on the team in 2012, and has been an excellent catcher for many years. He's also personally been my favorite member of the Phillies for quite some time. It's upsetting news for me not just because he won't be around for the first 25 games of the season, but also because his contract, which expires after the 2013 season, was presumably going to be extended by the Phillies and now that is very questionable.
I don't really understand why a baseball player would take amphetamines to supposedly increase performance though. The only explanation people give is that it makes you more focused when you're at the plate. Well, focus is good, but does a professional in the major leagues need a drug to help him stay focused on trying to hit the ball for the 2-3 minutes he's actually standing at the plate? Seems stupid, and besides, amphetamines also cause nervousness, so I'd think a player who regularly uses it would be too trigger happy and strike out a lot.
