Leadership is not synonymous with calling all the shots. Power requires an extraordinary amount of intricate political, economic, and social architecture to remain prevalent. In any large organization the ability to enforce standards from above requires extraordinary bureaucratic oversight. It's no coincidence that the rise of empires (simple governance) and ultimately nation-states took thousands of years.
Most 'alphas' exude confidence but can't retain relationships with anyone and ultimately if their egos are taken to excess in human settings would get their faces clobbered in were there no legal consequences. We don't live in a Hollywood movie where people happily think of themselves as secondary characters.
By the way, the status of alphas in canine societies is grossly exaggerated. Wolves are more likely to create pecking orders when they're subject to captivity and an environment that is not natural to them. In the wild they closely abide by a family structure: if they form packs, the fathers and mothers share responsibility. Something to ponder.
If you really want to think in these terms, 'betas' are ultimately the most successful men. Yeah you don't want to be a whiny little omega, but betas avoid the spotlight but use the opportunities to think, plan, and rise to the occasion when necessary.
