What Breakage needs to do is convince his company to hire him a a 'consultant'. Now you're self employed. Now 'expense' all your wages down to the £8k tax threshold and bingo, tax free wage! 
Also as you're self employed you can pay the minimum National Insurance of about 12 quid/month I think.
