Having lived in three of the four corners of the US I can say this: socal is pretty great. The weather is just too damn good to be depressed for long periods like it is on the east coast. I grew up in the mid atlantic and visited ny and dc quite a bit (still have a lot of friends out there). I think those cities are great for networking, meeting up with people, cultural life, whatever. And it is true that everyone in socal just talks about hollywood and the media, can be a bit anti-intellectual (which is for me a big sin). but the weather man...just went out for a ride near the pacific coast end of november and I barely noticed the chill. There are times growing up and going to school in the east coast when you wouldn't see the sun for a week or two, the "white christmas" turns to dirty slush, and it definitely affects your mood.
As for food, I really think it's silly to compare. Sure there are objective metrics such as the michelin star guide, but really it's whatever suits your budget and palate and for each person that's going to be different. My rinky dink college town had legit ethnic food (jamaican, thai, mexican, vietnamese, and more). LA tends to have big concentrations of populations from places such as armenia and iran, mexico, thai/viet/southeast asia, so you can get a wide range of food. It's sorely missing caribbean though, but then again I have Miami which will trump any place including NY for latin food.
