Return flight from JFK in New York to FCO in Rome is $3200 for two adults and two kids. Add on $120 a night for staying at a three star hotel in Tuscany. Add on daily expenses of $200 a day.
3200 + 800ish + 1400 = $5400.
In order to save that amount of money in a year, you'd have to put aside $450 a month.
If you make $30k a year, you make $2500 a month. So assuming your bills are under $2000 per month, which is no problem in rural areas, you can save that up in a year.
So you'd have a house, a new car, internet, cell phone, groceries, plus an annual vacation to Italy. Not bad.
My numbers could be off, but even if you increased the cost to $7000 for the vacation, it is entirely doable.
