California can drastically reduce its water consumption if necessary. Half of our states water isn't even metered, meaning you pay a fixed amount a month whether you have one bathroom or 3 pools. There are also some farmers growing rice here, pretty much the most water inefficient crop in existence.

Las Vegas is an urban area, it doesnt have the ability to drain the lake by itself. You do realize that the vast majority of water goes to agriculture, right?

To put things into perspective, NV is alloted 300,000 acre feet from the river each year. AZ gets 2.8 million acre feet and CA gets 4.4 million acre feet. Lake mead currently has around 13.5 million acre feet and annual inflows avg around 8.2 million acre feet per year. Cark county (Vegas) only consumes around 500,000 acre feet per year, the majority of that coming from the lake, but it is far from being the biggest consumer. f**k, the lake loses more water to evaporation every year than Vegas consumes.

they're also pulling a lot more water from the basin. it's wayyyyy overtapped and it isn't strictly due to climate change. i mean, it feeds most of the south west.

but yes, farmers are a huge problem.
