rural areas always pull from ground water, true. but at least in most of the rest of the country there are lakes and rain. the southwest is desert. people aren't meant to live there. at least not the numbers that are there now.

It all comes down to infrastructure and management of resources. Humans can live anywhere if things are done properly, and there is no reason the southwest cant continue to grow if the appropriate measures are taken.

what measures would those be? short of taking water from other locations, there isn't a whole lot they can that's feasible. and frankly, they shouldn't keep growing.

Who knows what the future holds. Hydro and vertical farming could be the norm 100 years from now. Advances in nanotech and biotech could completely revolutionize the food industry, I certainly expect synthetic meat to be the norm in a few decades. Current farming practices simply arent sustainable with a growing population so changes will definitely come out of economic necessity.

desalination is expensive and the power required for it is terrible for the environment.
