Anyway back to the GAMEZ.
Got planetside 2 today. Largely as it were free.
Loved the original, cool concept. MMO Combined arms FPS. Somewhat like an MMO Battlefield in some weird space world, where the entire planet is one persistent map. Promised to me MIGHTY SHINEY too.
Reality:
Laggy nightmare of unoptimised powerpoint style framefest. Lol 2 severs for the entire of Europe, 1 for asia. America gets 6. Even under 'medium load' expect anytime you actually go near a fight (and game mechanics encourages people to swarm areas) your game to get stupidly slow. So main point of game, large persistant battles, basically a no-go.
Day two and their are ques of 5 minutes minimum just to get on the damn things, made worse by the fact you can buy a 'premium membership' and get into the faster que Disney land style. Wow, poorly planned. Also they have gone down the 'CPU does the graphics route'... ok going to broaden the market, sure... but for when 2014?
Also lots of weird bugs. One in particular when I went into a certain area, my screen would flicker between the world and white constantly. As if my character was having mirco-strokes. Fair few people were also reporting this at the time.
Conclusion. May very well be a case study in rushing a game to market without stress testing or having sufficient distribution infrastructure.
