.....no. There isn't a next Gretzky. He's a statistical aberration. A glitch in the game. It's literally not possible for that to ever happen again.
He has 970 more points than the next guy. 2850 to 1900. For reference, in the NBA the split is a few thousand points. For Kareem to have as big a lead on Malone as Gretzky does over Messier, Kareem would have to have scored like 55,500 points in his career (or 33 points a game, 82 games a season, for 25 years).
Gretzky completed and entirely dominated and owned the sport for well over a decade. Nobody else has come close in any major American sport to that level of sustained dominance.
Nobody is making Kane to Gretzky comparisons because it has absolutely no basis in reality.
And for what it's worht gretzky may not have been a grind it out defenseman but he was alright. He stole the puck a lot and teams were on their heels a bit because of how deadly he was in transition off turnovers, even in his own zone. You couldn't take chances or be aggressive offensively with Gretzky on the ice because he could make just about anything happen if you turned the puck over and got caught with 3 guys deep. Kane doesn't have that sort of presence obviously.
