That's an assessment I can agree with. The need to be entertained is almost a mental illness at this point. A friend of mine hooked me up with free satellite in my new place, and I thought that was great, until I realized just how utterly pointless the programming was. I can't stand to watch more than a half hour before my brain feels like it's melting.
I find the majority of people just want to put in a certain amount of work everyday, than check out for the rest. Which is fine, but it doesn't lend itself to a satisfying life IMO. I like to do projects around the house or work on my business. If I feel lazy, I'll read a book or have a friend over for a beer and a chat. Anything to avoid staring at a screen for the night.
Our society is comfortable enough that people don't bother to self-improve. They don't want to use their brains, they want to be amused passively.
