The government has files on you too. The intelligence was simply collected by either Canada or the UK or Australia and handed over to the US. Nothing illegal about getting stuff from a third party.

Never having been in Times Square other than to walk through it on the way somewhere else, or to go to the Marquis Theater (saw Damn Yankees with Bebe Neuwirth there).
I'd imagine that TS for NYE is like Bourbon on Mardi Gras. It's something that people should do once, if they feel the need. Just to say they did it. But, it's not enjoyable. Too crowded, can't get into a bar to pee/drink/eat, can't hardly move.
But, I'm not even sure if this is an apt analogy. At least on Bourbon street, you can consume alcohol on the street (BYO), and watch the burlesque shows in the windows. But, it stinks to high heaven.

Madrid's version of time square (Sol) is awesome on NYE. No security, no anti-drinking restrictions, selling beer in the streets. Pretty much a free for all of celebration. The U.S.sucks at party.
