Ummm - I guess you guys don't realize what ACTUALLY happened?
The ground was frozen. And, the air temp was slightly below freezing. But, it was just warm enough for liquid water to fall from the sky (we call it "rain"). However, as soon as the rain hit the ground, it froze. Therefore, there was a layer of ice on the road surface.
It's not the snow or sleet that caused problems. It was ice. And, being that this specific set of conditions happens down here only every, say, 20 years, we don't exactly keep a lot of salt on hand for it.
But, now I'm curious - how would all of you "experienced Northerners" handle an ice-covered road, with no salt on it? Only way I know of is studded tires.
