i always thought it was soul crushing because one day they finally grokked their entire life was a monument to failure
this happens when they walk into mcdonalds and see their former brightest student at age 35 working behind the counter. the saddest part, of course, is that it takes them an entire career to realize this. all their hopes and dreams that it wouldn't be them but someone else that succeeded, that they made a difference in the world, crushed in that very instant. all sorts of mental blocks they had put up against reality crash down upon their soul, crushing it beyond all hope
