This was awhile ago but I knew someone who was a department manager at Walmart. She was the head of a whole department, and made $.50 more an hour than her people working under her. All the responsibility of managing people, inventory, weird hours, covering for people who didn't show, etc and she made a whole 50 cents more. Whoopee.
So I'm not sure getting a promotion really means that much. Maybe once you get in waaay up management ladder it's OK, but the floor and department managers got nothing.

Some facts:
Walmart pays below the average wages. They discourage unions from forming. They give crappy benefits. They import most items.
Walmart averages 10 applications for every 1 open position. They are the largest retail store in the world.
Seems like those negatives mentioned don't really discourage people from either applying for work or shopping there. Why should they change? If I were running a Walmart, I'd look at that 10:1 figure and conclude that we could possibly afford to depress wages even further, until we were down to roughly 5:1.
