Imperialism is about destroying a culture and stealing the accumulated capital said culture has accumulated throughout it's existence as well as it's traditional means to continue producing and replacing it with the European mode of production. So the French are hardly unique in that respect.
The myth of beneficial colonization is just that, a myth perpetrated by the imperialist cultures to justify the destruction inherent in their activities. The modern industrial mode of production that has replaced traditional means of production will literally be the cause of our species destruction, as the climate changes enough to become inhospitable to our biological requirements.
