I used to play rome TW.
Strategy 1.) Have a few rich cities that you keep a small garrison inside and a large army right outside. Tax the city a lot and create unrest. When the city rebels and the rebel army takes the city you can immediately attack with the army you have right outside. The conquer the city and exterminate the populace and cash in like 20k of the money. Rinse and repeat to fund large, expensive armies and conquests.
Battlefield:
Spearmen/ Hopolites: These guys are slow but never seem to die.
Also if you aren't raiding cities its hard to go wrong with an all cavalry army.
