The common thread for blood lust between the left and the right is personal connection. If the gov shoots/maims, takes away my mom/dad/son/sister/brother/best friend for what I think is an unjust reason.... moderation of violence ceases to exist.

I think most governments understand this. Detachment is much easier to invent than overt domination.

If the US had a civil war it'd be downright awful because it'd most likely devolve into a vicious counter-insurgency campaign. For a real civil war to make sense as part of some larger ideological conflict that could supposedly "purify" the country (or at least lead to a viable political division) you need to have relative parity between the opposing armies. Yes there were guerilla forces during the Revolutionary War and Civil War but there were also conventional battles.

Given the strong centralization behind the modern US military I doubt you'd really have someone like a Robert E. Lee break away and form something approaching a capable conventional army.
