If the US had a civil war it'd be downright awful because it'd most likely devolve into a vicious counter-insurgency campaign. For a real civil war to make sense as part of some larger ideological conflict that could supposedly "purify" the country (or at least lead to a viable political division) you need to have relative parity between the opposing armies. Yes there were guerilla forces during the Revolutionary War and Civil War but there were also conventional battles.
Given the strong centralization behind the modern US military I doubt you'd really have someone like a Robert E. Lee break away and form something approaching a capable conventional army.
