The NFL, or any sports league is NOT a normal business. The teams, and the players on those teams, are basically franchises under the NFL, and they agree to the NFL's rules and laws. If a team sign a contract and agrees to the NFL's rules and laws then they have to abide by the NFL's rulings.
It sux that Donald Sterling wasn't convicted of anything, but he violated the NBA's rules and by-laws, so he's out the door. Same thing with all these players in the NFL getting arrested for DWI's and fights, etc. The NFL does NOT have to wait for charges to be filed or a conviction before it punishes the player. PR is very important, baby.. More important than any one player or one team..
If the players or team owners don't like it they can go into another line of business.

Goodell is not going anywhere.. He'll take some heat for awhile, and take his lumps, but the owners LOVE him, he's not going anywhere. He's made the owners a ton of money.. Buffalo Bills are being sold now, with OUT their stadium yet the price tag is about $1.5 bil..
For the Bills, one of the shittiest teams in a very small, fairly crappy market.. $1.5 bil?? Imagine what the Cowboys would be worth, or Steelers, Or Giants, or GB, etc..
The NFL right now is on a roll. These guys are getting rich beyond belief. And they're not going to rock the boat while the cash is rolling in.
