Well yeah but what I'm saying is that he could fill in the role of 999 and then whoever is next becomes 1000 and the special one/number

One other thing: at least on the show, it appears others and wights cannot make it across even shallow waters. It would also seem that they can't use boats otherwise they would just sail around the wall. Anything to support this in the text?
