Everyone's heard of Samuel Clemens, but probably by his pen name Mark Twain. One of my favorite writers as well.

I also like Upton Sinclair, Ernest Hemingway, Franz Kafka and George Orwell. Hunter S. Thompson deserves honorable mention as well. There's too many great writers to pick only five and depending on the day and my mood I would prefer various writers over others.

Mark Twain and George Orwell, however, would always been in my top five.

E.E. Cummings is my favorite poet. i think his style and message cut deep.

I like e.e. cummings. I like a lot of poets: Thoreau, Dickinson, Hughes, Rimbaud, Ferlinghetti, Ginsberg, etc. But nothing, in my opinion, achieves the majesty that Shelley's greatest poems do.

I never got into poetry, but I did always enjoy Wilfred Owen.

What passing-bells for these who die as cattle?
