I couldn't care less. As someone that has a slight 'regional accent' I often use English words that are incorrect by dictionary definition, for example I'll some times use while instead of till, 'I'm working 9 while 5'.

Language is about being understood, if everyone gets what you are on about I fail to see the problem.

Gonna have to agree with Uebermann on this.

nauseous and nauseated are closely linked to each other (one being the cause & the other the symptom), but poisonous and venomous are distinct biological attributes.
There is also the context to consider: A newspaper article is different to a casual conversation.

Com, If a newspaper published an article about whales and repeatedly called them fish, would you say that was just a colloquialism? Of course not. This is just the same.

it wouldn't be a colloquialism because no one would understand why you were calling whales fish. the same is not true of venom and poison, clearly. and nauseous and nauseated being "linked" is completely irrelevant. if you two are going to adhere to a strict, literal etymological definition for every word then certain words don't get a pass because they're inconvenient to the point you're making.

I think newspapers should probably be more careful to use the correct words, but that in day-to-day use, there is nothing wrong with using the terms interchangeably. I also get mad at grammar and language nazis when they correct me in real life, despite knowing EXACTLY what I am talking about. The point of communication is to communicate - so long as the message gets across accurately, who cares?

I really don't want to see English come under sway of language police like what the French do.
