Was in Dubai the other week visiting my daughter who moved there from Abu Dhabi last November. Had afternoon tea in the Burj Al Arab, which was interesting and full of Russian mafioso dressed like Poirot. First time in my life I've had beef and mashed spuds for afternoon tea.Champagne OK, but tea was horrible.
I saw loads of slaves, maybe because I was staying at a private apartment. My daughter lives in downtown Dubai opposite the Burj Khalifa and just up the road from the Dubai mall. It wasn't really possible for me to go out much on my own, because the cab drivers are Indian and don't know where anything is, so I spent the days daughter worked lazing by the pool and swatting flies. What I remember most of all is the warm caress of the evening air, perfumed with a mixture of ginger, licorice and blackberry from the hookahs. Lovely.
Had some nice fish and chips at a restaurant overlooking the pond with the dancing fountains. Visited the fish market where I discovered the source of my genuine Hermes birkin bag. Bought a genuine Chanel tote bag from the same place.
Reminded me of Hoxton round there.
Was lovely to see my girl, who is as beautiful as can be.
