The whole point of the mandate in the ACA was to create pools that weren't made up of just old people that will have large bills. The economy of scale should've driven down premiums...again...that was the point (Oh and actually...premiums are set to go down this year). That was its efficiency. Along with a myriad of other items like utilizing generics, allowing kids to stay on with parents until 26, pre-existing conditions, etc. Pre-existing conditions actually did something too - it set the bar for the insurance companies. Created a level playing field.
It's always been about the risk pools. And as noted by ex the leverage that they can bring to the table.
Instead we're reverting back to a system where insurers utilize flaws in the legal system to avoid covering their clients. It's just deplorable.
