So I had to re-see the Hobbit, and I fear I was too charitable the first time around.
Pros:
Bilbo actor was really good
Andy Serkis is still good as Gollum
Cons:
Plot padded significantly for financial (not story) reasons (i.e. it's far better to have to cut material like from the book than add extraneous fluff)
Zero character development (i.e. 3 characters get attention and the remaining dozen or so are extras that the audience couldn't care less about, even though the director wishes we would)
Overwrought CG (LOTR only used CG for wide angle shots, mass battle scenes, etc.)
Action scenes felt forced (i.e. we've gone 40 minutes without an action scene, let's include a historic flashback to keep the audience from falling asleep)
A handful of minor aesthetic gripes regarding character design, enemy design, inconsistencies with LOTR (which would be excusable if it weren't the same damn production studio), etc.
5/10
I'll be Netflixing the final two. Should've seen Django instead.
