San Francisco is undoubtedly prettier and more historic than Austin, but San Francisco (along with NYC) are pretty much the top cities in the country. Austin is consistently rated as one of the top 5 cities due to prices, the music scene, and local bars. If you love San Francisco but can't afford to pay $1,700 a month for a 500 sf apartment, Austin is the next best thing.
If Austin had a better public transportation system it would be considered third or fourth best city in the country. City planners in Austin originally wanted to avoid the problems of urban sprawls; that's why there's only one highway that cuts through Austin and why Austin's suburbia is uniquely different. And like I said, Austin is a mix of liberalism and libertarianism which you won't find in California.
Plus L.A. is crap.
