And yet following every religious revival, some sort of awful social program was instituted. Eugenics. Prohibition. War on Drugs. The Culture War. You name it. All egged on by Christians concerned for the moral good of the nation.

that was progressives though, not "christians". it wasn't until the progressives got a hold of it that it ended up trying to force the morals on everyone else. previously when it was just christians it was cool. some drank, some didn't. what tipped it over the edge though was women's suffrage. flower of paradise

well they were obviously political before then. what the difference was was a change in how people viewed what government can and ought do. before progressives there was only a tiny minority of people who wanted to be total f**k douchebags and demanding people do this or that for moral concerns. most just thought they would go to heaven and their neighbor would go to hell. now they thought government must save the people from themselves. progressives are the most vile people on the planet
