I don't value ownership for resale value though. I value it intrinsically. I like having a nice collection of DVDs on my wall, available to be watched anytime, without needing an internet connection or a special piece of hardware outside of a TV and a DVD player. I dig the artwork in CDs. I like the feeling of hardcover books, and admire the craftsmanship of certain ones.
In terms of games, I like having the physical copy because I can take it to a friends place, pop it in, and go. No need to transfer ownership or let Microsoft know about it. It also comes bundled with cool stuff like stickers and maps of the virtual world you play in. I can resell it and buy new games with it, or I can leave it on my shelf and randomly decide to play it, years later, so long as I have a working console.
