while it may have been known in political circles as they all made fun of miss nancy, i don't know how much it was known by the electorate at the time. it was only because his once-fiance died somehow from some reason (insert insidious plot here) that he was able to not even talk about why he was a bachelor. because of people's sensibilities they didn't ask: he was so heartbroken he never loved again, clearly
