As an impartial observer, let me end this thread.

First, Comrade is correct. The rules of English allow for such interchangeability.

Second, Ueber is correct that newspapers should not use these particular terms interchangeably. They are reporting on a topic that makes use of academic knowledge - and those academics would not sanction using those terms to mean the same thing. Also, newspapers are supposed to be all about accuracy and informing people. You cannot do that if you do not adhere to some sort of literacy standard.

Hey, I'm with you. But I am old school and think the press should try to make people better, not just provide easily digested fluff. Simply explaining the difference would have added more to this article anyways. If you are going to write about this crap you should at least teach a little something along the way.
