that said there are plenty of homeowners who think things are "good enough" when it's really f**k not. so it's really if you are of the mindset that a job is always worth doing well. the previous homeowner for example installed every light in the bathroom slightly crooked in the same manner to the point I wonder if one of his legs was shorter than the other

I have mixed feelings about it.

On one hand, I don't really want most people to work on their homes themselves. The last guy who owned my house stapled cheap carpet directly to an one hundred and forty year old hardwood floor that is in otherwise perfect condition.

On the other hand, I think it is possible to do better work if you have access to expertise. Not YouTube, but a friend or family member who actually does that trade. Somebody who will trade time for pizza and beer. That's how you get the best results in my limited experience.

Ok so it turns out my outlet boxes arent actually large enough for the smart switches. Cheap ass builders. Considering bulbs now because its to much work to replace the boxes.

bulbs are a terrible idea. if you use bulbs, switching it off on the switch turns it off -- which makes it dumb. turning it back on it needs to boot up. a 'smart bulb' therefore means you cannot use a switch and are now forced to use an app or your voice at all times. this doesn't even get into the fact that you need to eventually replace bulbs

My doorbell is also mounted to the side of the entrance way and look out at the other side 2 feet away instead of looking out forward from the door. So basically I will need a battery powered doorbell and presumably will need to remove or cover my other doorbell? Oh wise wizard GALT, guide me further on my home automation journey.

eh, if all the wires are correctly covered in there, you can shove it in the box, no problem. just don't want to have a short is all. i have some older smart switches that are larger, the newest version (again, of GE) switches are about a third smaller so they fit better. This has only been a problem for me in multi-gang boxes though, specifically, 3 and more with extra wires (from fans and 3 way switches and shit). i just pushed it in hard anyway

as for the doorbell, the previous owner of my house left a ring doorbell. it is battery powered itself. i will say i am disappointed in the ring. it costs at least $3 a month to be able to do anything other than live-view or be alerted on your phone when things happen (which you can't review). you might want different doorbell system. there are others that can have multiple wireless receivers, and you can use something like Wyze for a camera if you wanted it. that keeps the last 24hrs or so on cloud with no cost that i'm aware of, and you can record more locally if you wanted to
