They run commercials when they can. They take them in between possessions because potentially you can have a drive that lasts a whole quarter and you can't just stop the game in the middle of it unless someone takes a timeout.

football and baseball both have predefined breaks which work well with commercials, yes. so f**k what? unlike hockey there is usually a reason for a timeout, whereas hockey it's "after 14:00, after 10:00, and after 6:00 remaining"

sorry guy, i had already pointed out in the very post you quoted that commercials are desired by the NFL and that nobody will listen to complaints re the current system because the sport is insanely popular.

But you took it, added some fluff and punctuation, then declared it your own work. you must be a partner at a professional services firm.

Criticism is for both, but primarily the degree of fluff you have to wade through to actually see athletes doing athletic things and see that strategy you're talking about play out. I think advertising is mostly responsible for this. Main point is, I'm pretty confident these dudes don't need 3 hours of planning to play 10 minutes of football and football would be a vastly better product if games were a lot shorter, both because there was less time for reviews, timeouts, lining up, etc. and because of less commercials.

Same can be said of baseball.

Also somebody recently argued that reducing the time between plays would lessen the chance of injuries in the NFL.

the strategy involved between plays is part of the game. it's wrong to say that they only play while the ball is "in play". you're completely discounting the entire strategy of the game and it's like you have no idea what's going on
