Ever since the camera was invented certain images have elevated beyond mere snap shots - While some we know were staged, others remain frozen moments in our history. dog kinda ruins the picture because he's totally fine not in the water. also looks instagrammed. sorry, i feel nothing when i see this picture.
i think iconic photos happen when you can see a photo and pretty much know what is gonna happen or what had happened
e.g., tank man, burning monk, victory kiss, plane about to hit trade towers

The kid with the sunglasses on looks totally non-plussed. Cool pic and poignant IMO

Definitely not very iconic. Maybe iconic by australian standards though. I'll post some pics tonight if I remember to.

I've always found it odd that the most-reproduced photograph of all time was actually staged.
I mean, it was reenacted immediately after the real thing, but the photo wasn't of the original event.

i don't find it odd. it was raised again because the first was too small to be seen from the beaches and that apparently the secretary of the navy wanted the one that was just raised as a souvenir: the first american flag raised on nip soil. the fact it went on to inspire a nation because of the photograph wasn't because it was staged for the photographer's benefit. and it's not as if it was the end of the fighting on iwo jima
