Yeah I don't want to cheer for the "bad guys" but I heard about this the other day and thought it was pretty cool. I'm sure those responsible for the diamonds don't see it that way though.

Heard an awesome quote on CNN this morning. Some dude was convicted of a crime like this back in the 70s and was being interviewed. Solidad asked him if they'd be caught. His response, "Well, a fish would never be caught if it didn't open its mouth."

Yup that is a risk.
On the other hand, the professionalism on display makes it likely they adhered to operational security, meaning they practiced need to know and had separate escape plans. More than likely, they've already split up, and have handed the sale of the diamonds over to a reputable black market dealer, who has more to lose screwing them than he does just doing his job.
This type of job isn't done by your average crook. It was done by men who understand the risks and know how to mitigate them with proper planning.
