I simply do not understand the practice of leaving water supplied open to the atmosphere. I saw that in NY last time I was there. All these open cisterns on roofs. Duh - of COURSE things are going to fall in there and die. Usually not humans, but plenty of birds, insects and tiny mammals.
That's just a gross custom.
