Part that scares me the most is having those ice picks tied to his hands when they are below his face. I seem to remember the X telling me to try to keep my arms above me if I went into a slide after falling when I was learning to ski so that I would be less likely to break my arms. Same with river rafting. You aren't very likely to have the strength to actually stop yourself with the added force of gravity and momentum and are more likely to break/sprain your wrists, elbows or shoulders. A pick to the face doesn't sound very good at all.
