A gif. is a pic posted on an internet forum when some jackass has no rebuttal and can't even find a mistake in the opposition's post to go all, "If you can't even spell, your retarded." The "g" is pronounced the same as it is in "graphics".

I always pronounced it with a hard g, for god sakes it's not gif peanut butter.

The above video is of the inventor of the format, Steve Wilhite, btw. If we're saying that the inventor get's to decide how to pronounce an acronym, then its settled.
